Federico Peña asked Denver voters to imagine a great city in 1983. Then he became mayor

"All these young people and others were dissatisfied with how things were going." Federico Peña was elected mayor of Denver in 1983 after Mayor Tom Currigan resigned for a position at Continental Airlines. Peña had previously worked with the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund and the Chicano Education Project, leading to a law requiring every district to support equal access to education. He also fought discrimination head-on, winning two terms in the legislature and becoming the House minority leader. Despite initially being considered crazy by some lawmakers, Peña convinced voters to run for mayor, arguing that the right candidate with the right message and the right campaign could win. In 1983, he ran for the first time and urged voters to imagine a great city, with a slogan created by co-foundword.
