Family of teen killed at Montbello Rec Center pushes for stronger security across Denver's facilities
Nasir Payne, 14, went to the Montbello Rec Center to play basketball when a fight broke out. His family is now pushing for broader change to protect kids across Denver. Nasir Payne, 14-year-old student at the Montbello Rec Center in Denver, was shot and killed by another teen earlier in the year. His mother, Lori Walker, has called for stronger security across Denver's facilities following the death of her son, Nasir Payne. The family claims he was defending his brother during a fight and was not the instigator of the violence. Following the shooting, police arrested a teen in connection with the shooting and charged him with reckless manslaughter and first-degree assault. The victim's family is now calling for an independent review of the case and community members have been calling for more safety measures at the rec center. Police have responded to the concerns raised by the family, stating they have increased patrols near the rec centre and surrounding areas since the shooting.
