Auditors find gaps in Denver and airport AI oversight
The City and County of Denver needs to strengthen its artificial intelligence governance framework, but auditors have found that the world’s 10th busiest airport has yet to establish one, according to a new report released Thursday by Denver City Auditor Timothy O’Brien. Auditors have found gaps in Denver's artificial intelligence governance framework and that the world's 10th busiest airport, Denver International Airport, has yet to establish one. The report, conducted by Denver City Auditor Timothy O'Brien, found that the city's Technology Services division has limited safeguards to prevent employees from entering sensitive or private information into public AI systems. While the city monitors its AI-driven chatbot, Sunny, for issues and response accuracy, auditors found no evidence that the agency monitors all AI systems equally. The city also lacks a formal process for handling AI regulations. Meanwhile, the airport has no AI governance framework or process for monitoring airport staff use of publicly available tools like Microsoft Copilot. The airport employees are using seven unreviewed or unapproved AI tools on the network.
