CU study links sports betting advertising trends to searches for gambling help

Researchers from University of Colorado Boulder studied sports betting searches and spending in several states, telling Denver7 advertising funding is only on the rise. A study by the University of Colorado (CU Boulder) has found that sports betting advertising may increase due to increased searches for gambling addiction help during games. The study was conducted by Professor Chris Vargo and Associate Professor Toby Hopp and Harsha Gangadharbatla of the University Of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to analyze Google search trends and monitor internet activity of over 400 people. They compared quarterly gambling advertising spending from 2014 to 2023 to search trends for 116 different gambling addiction assistance searches across 41 states. The biggest spikes in both spending and searches occurred during large sporting events such as the NCAA Division I basketball tournament and the Super Bowl. The research also found that after 24 hours of no observed gambling, a gambling ad pulled the person back into a sports betting site or app.
