Black bear spotted in Lafayette neighborhood

A black bear was spotted wandering around a Lafayette neighborhood Thursday morning. Black bear was spotted near the 2300 block of Indian Peaks Trail near the Indian Peaks Golf Course and was later spotted on Lavender Hill Lane, about 0.2 miles away from the golf course. The Lafayette Police Department alerted animal control and Colorado Parks and Wildlife, which will attempt to locate the bear and monitor its whereabouts until it wanders to a safer location or relocate it if necessary. The agency reminds people that black bears are intelligent and resourceful, looking for food sources. To keep your home bearproofed, lock doors when away from home and at night, keep garbage in a secure location, clean garbage cans regularly and use a bear-resistant trash can or dumpster. Don't hang bird feeders from April 15 to Nov. 15, which is a major source of bear/human conflicts.

The Lafayette Police Department tweeted about the sighting on X at around 8:30 a.m. The curious creature was spotted near the 2300 block of Indian Peaks Trail near the Indian Peaks Golf Course. The bear was then spotted again on Lavender Hill Lane, about 0.2 miles away from the golf course.

Police said animal control contacted Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Rangers will attempt to locate the bear and monitor its whereabouts until it wanders to a safer location or relocate it if necessary.

Living among bears is just a way of life in Colorado, but it’s important to know what to do if one wanders near your home.

Lafayette police said you should do your best to haze the bear away if it comes close to your home by yelling, blowing an air horn, activating a car alarm or making any other loud noises. Never approach or corner the bear.

CPW reminds everyone to stay “bear aware,” even if they live far from the foothills.

According to the agency, black bears are curious, intelligent and very resourceful. They will look for any food source.

Here are my tips on how to keep your home bearproofed:

• Lock your doors when you’re away from home and at night.

• Keep the bottom floor windows of your house closed when you’re not at home.

• Keep garbage in a well-secured location and only put out garbage on the morning of pickup.

• Clean garbage cans regularly to keep them free of food odors: ammonia is effective.

• Use a bear-resistant trash can or dumpster.

• Do not hang bird feeders from April 15 to Nov. 15. Bird feeders are a major source of bear/human conflicts. Attract birds naturally with flowers and water baths

• Do not attract other wildlife by feeding them, such as deer, turkeys or small mammals.

• Don’t allow bears to become comfortable around your house. If you see one, yell at it, throw things at it, make noise to scare it off.

• Secure compost piles. Bears are attracted to the scent of rotting food.

• Clean the grill after each use.

• Clean up thoroughly after picnics in the yard or on the deck.

• If you keep small livestock, keep animals in a fully covered enclosure. Construct electric fencing if possible.

By May 2023, CPW had already received 173 reports of bear activity in 25 counties.
