Federal Boulevard bus rapid transit project secures $50M in state funding
If all goes to plan, construction will begin in 2027 and people will be riding enhanced buses on Federal Boulevard by 2030. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has secured $50 million in funding for the Federal Boulevard bus rapid transit project. The funding comes from the Nonattainment Area Air Pollution Mitigation Enterprise (NAAPME), a grant program housed within CDOT and managed by a separate board of directors. Two phases of construction will include 74 new bus stations, complete with glass windscreens, protective canopies, arrival displays, ticket vending machines, emergency call boxes and pedestrian lighting. NAAPME is also committing an additional $2.7 million in annual maintenance. If all goes as planned, Federal Boulevard service will start in 2030. The project is expected to decrease daily traffic along Federal by an average of 7%, more than double ridership and improve dozens of intersections for pedestrians, drivers and buses.
