Outside partisan groups pour millions into key Colorado legislative contests
Republican Senator John Carson benefited from significant outside spending totaling over $1 million in October. Outside partisan groups are spending millions of dollars this election cycle on competitive statehouse races in Colorado, with some instances spending far greater than what the candidates themselves are putting up. Democrats are likely to retain the majority in both the state House and Senate, but the question is whether they can secure a two-thirds supermajority in November to override vetoes and put constitutional amendments on the ballot without Republican support. Independent expenditure committees focusing on electing candidates to the Senate and House of Representatives are spending similar to their expenditures during the last election cycle in 2024. In Pueblo’s Senate District 3, over $2 million was spent on either Democrat Aaron Gutierrez or Republican Dana Charles, according to campaign finance filings. The Senate Majority Fund, which backs Republican Senate candidates, has spent over $800,000 on Charles' race and defending Republican Sen. John Carson’s seat in Highlands Ranch. Meanwhile, All Together Colorado, a Democratic spending group, directed around $130,000 in October to support Gutierrez, while Pueble People for Change provided significant support for Gutierrez.
