Rep. Gabe Evans embraced much of Trump’s agenda. Now he’s running from an unpopular president’s long shadow.

“On the big votes, he’s with Trump. And that’s hard to get away from,” Colorado State University political scientist Kyle Saunders said of U.S. Rep. Gabe Evans and his prospects for reelection. U.S. Rep. Gabe Evans, who has embraced much of President Donald Trump's agenda in Colorado's 8th Congressional District, is in a tough political fight against an unpopular war, inflation, and uncertainty over immigration enforcement. Despite aligning with the president's agenda, Evans has attempted to moderate his stance on certain issues, including immigration enforcement priorities. His opponent, former state Rep. Manny Rutinel, has argued that Evans is merely a puppet of the president. These challenges are part of a wave of anti-GOP sentiment among voters, which is forcing party operatives and fundraisers to shore up races across the country as Republicans struggle to maintain their slim House majority.
